Do you ever feel like everything around you is breaking and falling apart? You’re searching for ways to fix what’s broken in your life but are inches away from admitting defeat?
We all can look into our lives and see things that don’t work any longer, that don’t serve the purpose for which they were intended. They may no longer function in the way we had expected, wanted or desired. But that does not necessarily mean all is lost and hopeless. Sometimes what seems destroyed might just need a new purpose to be renewed, redefined and rebirthed.
“Broken No More Workshop” with Lisa Nomikos explores ways to define what’s broken in your life, to shine the light on “hope” and see it differently.
During this workshop, Lisa will lead you on a shamanic healing journey using guided meditation based on her artwork in the exhibit, Broken Drum Renewed. This will help you find your way to redefine the meaning of “broken” in the situation you are focusing on. You will explore your own writing and artmaking as tools for self-discovery and healing.
The Backstory of Broken Drum Renewed
My friend stood quietly in front of me holding a plain, large drum in front of her. “Lisa, it’s broken. I’m so upset. I have to throw it away.”
I looked at the beautiful drum in her hands. Sadness filled my stomach too. My 5-year-old daughter Gina had laughed tapping her hand on its surface only a week before. I had wished I had the funds to buy it. My friend’s whispered words caught me off guard and brought me back to the present. “Will you fix it? Would you please paint something on it?”
I didn’t realize I had kept her waiting. “Of course!”
I took the drum home not knowing what I’d paint…and it sat in my office for a year, silently, patiently waiting to be reborn. One day, I saw within my mind the drum image form…When I grabbed my brushes, wolf, bear, trees, owl and hawk flowed upon the drum’s surface. A poem began to flow…
Broken Drum Made Anew
By twine and paint to renew
the torn hide thought ripped beyond repair,
meant for the trash, a broken ear.
Then a choice. An intention.
A loving intervention.
This drum that lost its beat,
now sings a sweet painted sound
with owl, hawk, wolf and bear and hidden images….

Those words are for the times that things seem broken beyond repair, hopeless, ruined, destroyed, when you can’t see how to make anything better. This drum sings out its message of hope and healing for us all…just because the drum is torn and can no longer function as a drum, doesn’t mean it has no value. The animals and message on the drum remind us of our own sovereignty. We are valuable. There is hope. Anything can be remade and have new life. It’s our choice.
Suggested Supplies:
- Blanket or yoga mat for meditation portion
- journal and pen
- colored pencils and paper will be provided
- if you’d like to use any other art supplies, please bring them: water colors or acrylics with your brushes, watercolor paper or canvas for acrylics, graphite pencils, charcoal, erasers, crayons, markers, etc.
NOTE: If you are taking this class by zoom, you will need to provide your own art supplies
Restrictions: please do not bring oil paint, turpentine, nor linseed oil for using with oil paints. I’m highly allergic and cannot have it being used around me without having allergic reactions. Thank you!
